Getting Started with MyWorld Abroad

Open Parrish Library Homepage

in another browser window to work through this tutorial side by side.

This tutorial will show you how to use MyWorld Abroad, a database that specializes in showing how to gain professional experience abroad. You will learn:

1. How to access the MyWorld Abroad database.

2. How to navigate and search for career opportunities abroad.

3. How to find comprehensive guides to starting a career abroad.

To begin, from the Parrish Library homepage, select the List of Business Databases on the left side of the page.

Then select MyWorld Abroad from the list of Parrish databases.

(If you are off campus, it will ask for your Purdue username and password.)

MyWorldAbroad is a trusted resource, used by leading universities in the US and Canada to encourage students to go abroad, build international skills and prepare for successful careers in the new global economy.

Note: When you first use this database, you'll need to register with your Purdue University e-mail address. Registration is free, but necessary to get the full benefits of the database.

After registering, Log in to MyWorld Abroad.

On the homepage, you'll see access to a variety of resources related to seeking opportunities abroad. A good place to start is by browsing the tabs at the top of the page.

The first tab, "What Do You Want To Do?" is a great way to get started.

Click "What Do You Want To Do?"

From here, you can view articles depending on your interest and level of understanding.

For our example, let's learn the basics about working abroad.

Click "Work Abroad: Basics"

The resources available on this page will take you through what you should know first, how to prepare yourself, and how to find work abroad.

Let's explore what kind of jobs are available!

Under "Find Work Abroad Now," click "All Job Boards."

From here, you'll see a search box that you can use. However, it can be helpful to begin by narrowing down your search options by "Resource Type." This will allow you to choose a subject that is most suited to your career path.

Click the drop-down box under "Resource Type."

For this example, let's choose Business & Finance.

As you can see, choosing a specific resource type limits the Job Boards so that you only have to sift through the ones most pertinent to your personal search.

Scroll down through the list of job boards.

You'll see that each result has a title and description so that you can decide if it will be helpful to your search or not.

Let's explore another facet of MyWorld Abroad.

At the top of the page, click on "The 4 BIG Things."

"The 4 BIG Things," is a four-part guide that builds your skills for an international career from the ground up. It teaches you how to build your international skills, get experience, find work, and all about the job potential abroad.

For our purposes, let's start at the beginning. Click "International Skills."

Your results will be a list of articles geared toward helping you build your international skills, become an effective employee overseas, and uncover myths and realities of working abroad.

Let's choose an article. Click "Skills for Succeeding Abroad" or another title that interests you.

Once you bring up an article, you can see that the left-hand side of the page organizes the articles much like chapters in a book, which makes navigation between the parts of each section very easy.
