This tutorial covers how to use Mergent Online to find company financials and reports. This tutorial will cover:

  • using Mergent Online for company research
  • how to find company details and company financials that you need
  • what reports are available using Mergent online

To begin, from the Parrish Library homepage, select the List of Business Databases on the left side of the page.

Then select Mergent Online from the list of Parrish databases.

(If you are off campus, it will ask for your Purdue username and password.)

We are looking for Hershey, a chocolate company.

Enter the ticker symbol (HSY) or company of interest and Mergent Online will give you a list of guesses. The one you are looking for is "Hershey Company, the".

First we are going to examine the 'Company Details' tab. Click on the tab.

Here you will find a description of what the company is and what they do, key financial information, business history by year and business segments by time, scale or type of currency.

 

In the Company Financials Tab, you will find financials, ratios, prelims and business analysis.

The Annual Balance Sheet (in the Company Financials Tab) can include more than 15 quarters of financial information or more.

You can also find analysis in the company financial tab and rations like the EBITDA margin %.

In the Reports section, you can also find annual reports for the company. Navigate over to this section and see what sorts of reports you can find.  How far do they go back?

In the News tab, you can get recent information on the company.
Mergent Online can be used to search for private companies as well as public companies, but remember private company do not need to disclose the same financial information. Thank you for using this tutorial!
