This tutorial covers how to use BizMiner.
To begin, from the Parrish Library homepage, select the List of Business Databases on the left side of the page.
Then select BizMiner from the list of Parrish databases.
(If you are off campus, it will ask for your Purdue username and password.)
This is the homepage for BizMiner, where you can find industry financial analysis and marketing research reports at the national and local level.
From here, you’ll want to either search for an industry by clicking on "Industry Search" at the top of the page, or by click on "Find Industry Reports."
Click Industry Search at the top of the page.
Then, click "Search Tools" from the drop down menu.
After you open the Industry Search, you can enter a NAICS code, if you know it, or drill down through different types of industries to find what you want.
We’ll choose the Information Industry
You’ll get a list of more detailed industry segments that you can continue to drill down.
We’ll choose Telecommunications next.
Then, choose Wireless Telecommunications Carriers (except Satellite).
Now that we've drilled down, we're provided with a list of industries. You’ll select an industry from the list provided.
We’ll choose Wireless Phone Service, which we now know, is a Wireless Telecommunications Carrier in the Information Industry.
Click Show Industry Reports under Wireless Phone Service.
After choosing an industry, you can access Financial Profiles, Micro Firm Profit-Loss Reports (if available), Industry Market Reports, or use the Competitive Market Analyzer.
Let’s find an Industry Financial Profile for Arizona here under “Select Metro”.
Click Select a Metro, then choose Arizona.
After a moment, you’ll be asked to select a sales class.
We’ll choose 1 million-2.49 million for our sales class and then we’ll choose “access now."
Here is our report. You can choose the format of your report here in PDF, HTML, or CSV files.
Please note that this report WILL OPEN in a NEW TAB, so proceed with caution and exit that new tab to return to this one.
If you'd like to browse the report in a new tab, follow these directions:
To open the report, choose PDF.
Your BizMiner report will include a summary of your search criteria as well as the contents of your report.
Locate the summary of your search results.
Locate the contents of your report.
Scroll through the report to see some of the tables and charts.
Some of the tables have writing underneath--this is how BizMiner defines and explains the tables in their reports.
