This tutorial covers how to use Privco (a library database) to find private company financials and reports. This tutorial will cover:

  • using Privco for private company research
  • how to find company details and company financials that you need
  • what information is available searching in Privco

To begin, from the Parrish Library homepage, select the List of Business Databases on the left side of the page.

Then select Privco from the list of Parrish databases.

(If you are off campus, it will ask for your Purdue username and password.)

Before we get started, you'll need to register & log-in to PrivCo.

At the top of the screen, you'll want to click Register.

Complete the form required for registration with your Purdue e-mail address.

Next, you'll need to activate your account. In another window, click the link inside the e-mail that PrivCo sends you to activate.

Next, log-in to PrivCo at the top of the page.

What is Privco? Privco is the "premier source for business and financial data on major non publicly traded corporations including family owned, private equity owned, venture backed and international unlisted companies" (their website).

From this dashboard, you can do a quick search (locate) at the top, search based on location/industry/size based on revenue (locate), or browse by trending business sectors (locate).

You can also do advanced searches for investors, venture capital fundings, mergers and acquisitions deals, and private equity deals on the lefthand side of the page. Locate those now.

Now that we're registered and logged-in, let's try a company search.

We are looking for Mars Inc, a chocolate company that is private. Remember that since Mars Inc is a private company, it is often harder to find financial information about it. Privco, however is a private company database that specialized in private company information.

To begin, let's use the search box to search for "Mars Inc". It is the first result, located in Virginia.

Once you find the company you're looking for, you can add the company to your watch list, add notes to the report, view industry activity, download your report as a PDF, export your report as an Excel spreadsheet, or scroll through your report. Take a moment and locate some of these functions in the drop down menus at the top of the report.

Scroll through the report. In the Overview & Corporate Organization section, we find a basic company profile. Locate this part of the report.

A little lower, you'll find industry classification codes and major competitors. Locate this part of the report.

In the Mergers and Acquisitions section, we find lots of information about the value of the company and if the company has been bought or sold. Locate this part of the report.

A bit lower, you'll find exhibits. This includes things like patents. And these are all readily downloadable. Locate this part of the report.

Lower still, you'll find recent news, analysis, and a detailed overview of the company and their business model. Locate this part of the report.

Remember that Privco only has private company information. For information on publicly traded companies use one our other Parrish company research databases.

Thank you for using this tutorial!
